Created by Dr. Jain Fairfax
The whimsical series, "Mrs. Twizzleton's Magic Garden" was created to educate children about gardening and also teach social and emotional skills through a musical fairy tale format. The creator of the series, Dr. Jain Fairfax, is both a performer and a psychotherapist who believes reaching children through all their senses is the way to build self-esteem, an important element in future success.
Thirteen episodes delight viewers with many segments, "News in a Nutshell" with Walnut Klunkite sharing happenings in the world of nature, "The Shoebox Theatre" which uses music and animation, "Wilda Wynkem", who relates "Odd Information", Gardening tips and planning sessions with Father Thyme, and much more. Each show focuses on a topic children may face in their day-to-day experience: bullying, anxiety, change, loneliness, differences, family issues, etc. Testing in the area of the ability of a student to participate in the educational experience showed that watching "The Magic Garden" in the classroom, completing lesson plans that complement the show, and group discussion raised at-risk students' total scores.
Dr. Fairfax's extensive background in family psychology makes her an expert in her field. In addition to the series, she has performed on Broadway, television, and in podcasts. Her other series of talks on post-traumatic stress can be seen on Facebook and Instagram.
The Magic in the series may very well lie in the attention paid to students, the richness of the material in the shows, the fun displayed by Mrs. Twizzleton and her magic guests, and the high quality of the social-emotional content. Children love the series, and so do the parents and teachers!
